Well, I don’t see this driving through the Australian outback like the original Defender. Suited for mums taking kids to school and latte drinking white collar show offs. Piece of junk

I hated first but I quite like it now cause they've tried to do the classic defender design with a modern twist

To everyone who criticises it for having too many ecu's welcome to the 21st century. By comparison look at the 2019 Hilux: touchscreen infotainment, lane keep assist, electronic chassis control, active cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring... need I go on. You can't expect Land Rover to make a vehicle with 1980s tech or they will go bust. Defender European sales fell from a peak of 9000 in 2004 to 1200 in 2016. Which car maker can afford to make a vehicle with such limited demand? The Defender is dead, long live the Defender!

As I look at the comments, which only echo my own feeling of how widely LR missed the mark, totally forgetting the point of the Defender (which was inspired by a jeep that's still sold brand new with solid axles btw), I can't help but wonder what LR is thinking about the dumpster fire they just started. This should have been the Discovery (which missed the mark as well). They will only cannibalize sales from their existing products, because Defender buyers don't want 85 ecus, airbag suspensions, expensive to replace body panels, or tons of gizmos that will break, and would never last if they were being used for the Defenders intended purpose. They should have built a vehicle the military, and farmers could use, because they already have plenty of vehicles for wealthy Soccer moms. Sadly, someone should loose their job over this. LR may loose their brand over this. Building it in Slovakia is just another hard slap in the face, which is in the worst of taste after displaying this insulting parody of a ruff and tumble British icon. I'm so disappointed in LR.

It looks bland, plastic and crap , and full of useless gadgetry and electronic gizmos all waiting patiently to go wrong and force you to withdraw plenty of dosh from your bank account in order to put them right ......I remember when all people wanted was a tough and reliable go anywhere vehicle that was easy to run and maintain ( those were the days ) so perhaps it might be better to wait with baited breath for the GRENADIER to appear on the horizon .

Usless for military use. Its a discovery. Why oh why do they mess up like this. I could make something way better. Should have let it loose with the army and run it to distruction. I would say this is a discovery. They need to go back to basics and start again to get a defender.

The litmus has to be if the British Army buys it, surely? What I find interesting is that Mercedes brought out a new G-Wagon by simply updating it. You can tell it is the same car - in function and form - but for 2018 not 1979. This new Defender might have a few old Defender design hues but it could so easily could have been a new Discovery/Explorer/Navigator/FJ Cruiser. Just my opinion.

I like it BUT This should have been the Discovery. A Defender should be a simpler workhorse vehicle maintained with basic mechanical knowledge for all world use. They don't know their own vehicle values and markets.

I don`t mind the appearance, but far to much tech, and plastic looking. My local farmers won`t be using it, but their wives will be for the school run. And as for the military, I won`t even go there.

car makers should offer voice recognition and voice activated controls for the ease and comfort of their customers, a good example would be left turn signal on, then left turn signal off, hands free driving is the way to go

I’m not sure who this is aimed at. I have a Range Rover so the comfortable 4x4 is covered. I quite fancy a Defender for pulling the horse box in the slushy winter and for going to the pub in Chelsea. I think an old one is a better bet. Don’t like the plastic bumper but otherwise it looks good.

    • Freeman
      Freeman Pirms 5 Stundām

Alas, a Hilux appears to be a better option as a working vehicle. They ought to have designed these for farmers first and foremost - that way they'd have had a chance of keeping the integrity of the original and still sold plenty of them to posers.. They're bound to sell plenty of these though.
